Project Description

This project is the byproduct of an enormous effort from a very small team. Impractical Jokers Take NYC is a mobile game that allows players to join the hilarious foursome - Sal, Q, and Murr - in the Big Apple for a wild and wacky adventure. With over 20 games to play, players can test their skills and humor through challenges inspired by the show, such as “Twerkin’ at the Car Wash” and "Putting the P in Pool".

The project included an enormous amount of content including 5 unique zones, 8 world missions with 100+ lines of dialog, 120+ achievements, randomized daily quests variable economy design and countless wardrobe outfits.

Meet the Jokers.

The aesthetic we set off to create is one that captures the humor and spirit of the hit TV show. All models are slightly exaggerated and textures painted with bright and bold colors to create a cohesive aesthetic that is both faithful to the TV show and appealing to players.

The playful and saturated look of the game aims to capture the attention of fans and non-fans alike.

Customize everything.

Knowing that we wanted players to be able to express themselves via outfits, we created a wardrobe with over 100 pieces of clothing, including hilarious and iconic Punishment outfits from the show. This is supported by the rigging system that we developed internally to allow for reuse of animations across the Jokers, the player and NPCs.

Explore New York.

We included some iconic locations from the show to help set the tone and allow for a natural progression for unlocking all of the game’s content. We created custom level designs and 3D models for all locations including Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Dix Hills.

Play over 20 games.

We created over 20 unique games for our mobile game by designing clear objectives and rules, balancing each game's difficulty, and adding custom achievements to encourage replay. The games are easy to pick up and offer a challenge that increases as players progress through levels.

Complete missions.

We created 8 missions with custom objectives to guide players through the game's content at an intentional pace. The objectives showcased different aspects of the game and served as a roadmap for players, unlocking gated content and earning rewards. This deliberate pacing and structured approach ensured that players had a fun and engaging experience while mastering each aspect of the game

Earn daily bonuses.

To increase retention and engagement, we created achievements, daily quests, and log-in bonuses.

Achievements provided a sense of accomplishment for completing more difficult challenges within the game, while daily quests offered rewards for logging in and completing tasks each day. Log-in bonuses further incentivized players to return to the game by providing daily rewards for simply opening the app.

A simulated economy.

To simulate the economy of the game, I created a spreadsheet with hard and soft currency values that were assigned to all areas of the game's economy. The spreadsheet tracked the values of various items and upgrades in the game, ensuring that the economy remained balanced and fair for all players.
