Project Description

Atlanta History Center created a signature exhibition space in order to show the impact that the 1996 Olympic and Paralympic Games had on the city of Atlanta and were looking for a partner to help bring this space to life via digital experiences. Filled with memorabilia from athletes and fans, we set out to help them build experiences that felt natural to the space and not like a digital afterthought.

The full experience.

In order to create a digital space for exploration and play, we created a total of 5 different digital experiences including audio/video exploration stations, an interactive map and city skyline builder.

Audio from the past.

To say that this partnership was an exercise in creative problems solving is an understatement.

Reliving the moments.

To say that this partnership was an exercise in creative problems solving is an understatement.

Map over the years.

This was my absolute favorite one. The client originally suggested having a TV mounted to the wall but I suggested a more intentional design motif. Atlanta is surrounded by I-285, so I designed a stylized map that fit within a perfect circle then proposed that a hole be cut into the wall and the TV be mounted from behind. The end result looks amazing!

Build your ideal city.

This experience allowed users to build their Atlanta skyline of the future by choosing what is most important to them in a city. Once created, each skyline was appended to a projected area above where all user skylines were on display. Users could then scan a QR code and get a downloadable version of their skyline to share across social media.

All was going well…

Then COVID happened.

Then COVID happened. •

Making touch screens touchless.

Right as the pandemic began, we realized that all of these touchscreen experiences would be completely obsolete and we’d need to find a quick and affordable solution.

We quickly threw together a demo using Leap Motion as our touchless controller, came up with some fabrication ideas and go to work creating an alternative control scheme for every experience. It was tough but I’m absolutely thrilled that we were able to pivot this effectively.
