I put my dog into a Pokémon card.

My Role

Concept Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Printing

Project Description

I’ve been collecting Pokémon cards since 1999. Though many of the original Pokémon are still in print production today, the aesthetic and quality of the cards has only gotten better over time. The illustration styles are gorgeous, the card fidelity is unparalleled and I wanted to immortalize my perfect dog, Zuzu, with her very own card.

Creating the artwork.

Zuzu is a Bernese Mountain dog and thrives in the cold. I decided to make Zuzu an ice type, place her in a whimsical winter wonderland, and surround her with simple snowflake effects. I also overlaid some guilloche patterns in order to give a similar effect that the high fidelity cards have that I could also achieve with my 10 year old printer.

Building the frame.

I painstakingly recreated the artwork using Photoshop and Illustrator to design a template that would allow me to create a bunch of different cards in the future at 300dpi.

Making it look legit.

After a bunch of iterations — and being really impressed with what my ancient printer could achieve — I printed the final card using high quality printer paper as well as a holographic film to make this card shine! I also slabbed it with a fictional company and gave it the highest grade possible.
